Chargers fight hard for their 21st straight win

After trailing by as many as 12 points, the Georgia Highlands College men’s basketball team found a way to survive for a 68-66 win Saturday over conference foe South Georgia Tech.

With the game tied at 66 with 14 seconds to go, the Chargers in-bounded the ball to Doniel Dean who ran the clock down to eight seconds, then drove to the basket and hit a running jumper to put the Chargers up two with 4.3 seconds left. South Georgia Tech in-bounded the ball, but the Chargers’ Tylik Evans stole the ball and ran out the clock for the win.

“We had a horrible shooting night, but we overcame it with hustle and heart,” said Charger head coach Phil Gaffney. “Kevon Davenport struggled at the free throw line but had a great night with 20 points and nine rebounds.”

Tylik Evans had 15 points and six rebounds, Doniel Dean and Keymont Jenkins each had eight points. With the win the Chargers go to 21-1 on the season and 9-0 in GCAA Conference play.

Up next for the Chargers is a conference game at home against Albany Tech on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.
