GHC displays 2977 flags in remembrance of September 11th

AS SEEN IN THE DAILY TRIBUNE NEWS:

Georgia Highlands College will never forget.

The college’s Student Veterans Club will mark the 14th anniversary of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center towers by displaying almost 3,000 American flags on the Cartersville campus.

“We did it last year the week of 9/11 as well,” said Student Center Director Clifton Puckett, who is working on the project with Student Veterans Coordinator Amy Wise. “We also hung flags in the Student Center for each branch of the armed forces.”

At 9 a.m. Tuesday, students and volunteers will begin placing 2,977 small flags in the courtyard in memory of the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001.
“It had such positive response last year, Amy decided to bring it back this year,” Puckett said. “Each flag is to symbolize each lost life in the 9/11 attacks, and this is just another way to memorialize them.”

While the event is a Student Veterans Club project, “the entire GHC community pitches in to help place the flags on the hillside,” Puckett said.
“A mass email was sent to all students, faculty and staff on all five campuses to ask for volunteers,” he said. “Amy, ... the faculty advisor for Student Veterans Club, does a good job of getting faculty and staff to help out as well. Anyone who can and wants to will arrive Tuesday morning to place the flags. They’re invited to drop in and out, as their schedules permit.”

The event has become a yearly activity for the club, which has at least 20 active members on the college’s five campuses.
“Almost immediately after the success last year, it was decided to make it an annual occurrence,” said Puckett, who was sitting in a 10th-grade history class when he first heard about the attacks.

Some of the flags, which will remain on display until Monday, were donated by local veterans organizations, and some were purchased with club funds, Puckett said.
