Basketball team signs four new players
Georgia Highlands College has signed four new players to its women’s basketball team this year. Transferring from all over Georgia, these players will be joining the 2015-2016 team for the upcoming season.
Taylor Harris will be moving from her hometown in Snellville after graduating from South Gwinnett High School and wrapping up her high school basketball track, where she was a part of the Region 8-AAAAA championship team, received most improved player in 2011 and was selected to play in the Gwinnett County All-Star game.
Head Coach Brandan Harrell and Assistant Coach Demetrius Colson stated that Harris’ best game was last year against Greenforest High School, where she scored 15 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists and 1 block.
“We think Taylor has not reached her peak yet. She is skilled and very athletic and fun to be around,” Harrell said. “She also will play multiple positions for us. She can handle the ball and score. She is a very hard working player.”
All the way from Atlanta, Auriana Broughton will be transferring to GHC from Eastern Oklahoma College.
While in high school at Chamblee High, Borughton averaged 10 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1 assist, 2.6 steals, 1.1 blocks and shot 65% from the free throw and 36% from the arc.
“For us, Auriana will be ahead of the game coming into the season. She has played one year of college ball and she will be familiar with what it takes to play on the next level,” Harrell said. “We will be asking a lot from her.”
Sydney Garnigan will be making her move from Hiram High. During her last high school season, she averaged 6.17 points, 4 rebounds, 1.28 assists, 1.55 steals per game and shot 30% from behind the arc and 70% from the free throw.
“Sydney also runs track in High School and has qualified in all of her meets this year. We hope that effort and energy will pay off during the pre-season workouts. We are looking forward to adding her to our group,” Harrell said.
Taylor Farley is graduating from Kendrick High School in Columbus this year and will be joining GHC next season. While at Kendrick High, Farley won a High School Championship, where her team went 29-0. She has scored 763 points during her four years there.
Harrell and Colson stated that Farley’s best game was against Peach County High School. During that game, she scored 20 points, 11 rebounds, 1 assist and 3 steals.
“She was coached by one of the top coaches in Georgia,” Harrell said. “She will come in and be able to relate to our style of play. The way she played defense in high school will translate to her college level… she will be something special.”
