Fifth annual Public Speaking Competition yields biggest turnout yet

Georgia Highlands College’s fifth annual 2015 Public Speaking Competition, held last Friday in Cartersville, was the biggest one yet. All of the competitors wrote original persuasive speeches about topics of their choosing and delivered them in a multi-round format for an audience and judges.

Fifty GHC students, representing all five GHC campuses, competed at the event. In addition to a number of small gifts and participation certificates, 12 semifinalists earned GHC Student Life T-shirts and six finalists earned checks and gift cards worth a total of $500. The finalists were: Christin Koutavas (1st), Isaac Morales (2nd), Nicole Koehler (3rd), Jack Deakin (4th), Adrian Scheppe (5th), and Caitlin Robinson (6th).

This event could not be possible without the continued support of the Rome Area Council for the Arts, GHC Student Life, GHC SPAA, the GHC Bookstore, and our volunteers: Malika Jones, Renva Watterson, Jayme Feagin, Meredith Ginn, Allen Dutch, Alex MacMurdo, Jeff Kozee, Sharryse Henderson, Greg Smith, Susan Vines, Melinda Myers, Connie Watjen, Kristie Kemper, Abigail Greenbaum, Kathryn Garcia, Michelle Boyce, Amy Gandolfi, Donna Miller, Dana Pergrem, and Travice Obas.

Assistant Professor of Communication Steve Stuglin serves as the competition director.
