From Coach Phil Gaffney:

“The real reason we are nationally ranked is because we are 8-1 but the big thing is that to be nationally ranked you have to beat nationally ranked teams. This is only the third year of our existence so nobody really knows about Georgia Highlands around the country.

Last week we beat Chipola College, which is ranked 7th and we beat Wallace State last Saturday, which was ranked 25th. We lost to Northwest Florida and they are now number 3 in the country. We did lose to them but it was in a very close game and it was away. So we beat two ranked teams and lost to one in a matter of eight days and that got us on the map. We have had a really good start so far. All of our wins have been by double digits, so we’ve been winning convincingly.

We would like to go higher than 23rd but we are very, very happy with 23rd. Out of hundreds of teams, we are happy to be where we are. This will also give us more exposure nationally, which is always good for recruiting.

This is nice but, honestly, it is still November. We are focused on March and being really good up to that point. Our goal is to win our conference championship, the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association, which will position us to go the nationals in Hutchinson, Kansas in March.”
