Healthcare career camp offered at GHC this summer
Rome, GA –April 22, 2014
Jobs in healthcare are forever evolving and the demand has never been greater. In an effort to educate students about available health professional careers and to cultivate their interests with hands-on experience in related healthcare areas, Blue Ridge Area Health Education Center of Rome in partnership with Georgia Highlands College, will host a summer camp called “Career Quest...A Journey Through Healthcare”.
The camp will be held June 2-5, 2014 at the Georgia Highlands Rome campus and is open to current and rising 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students interested in the world of healthcare. "The idea of the Career Quest camp is to have various health care professionals work with students on fun, health-related activities" started Barbara Naymick, Health Careers Coordinator Blue Ridge AHEC. "These hands-on experiences and networking opportunities are invaluable in allowing students to experience the dynamic world of health careers."
This 4-day camp, especially designed for the student who wants an inside look at careers in healthcare, is jammed-packed with career exploration and networking opportunities. Areas of exploration include: Foundations of healthcare (science and math); 10 of the most interesting healthcare careers today; infection control practices and medical terminology; cultural awareness in working with a diverse populations; and local opportunities to get involved in healthcare before you graduate.
“By the year 2020, 60% of the job market will require a minimum of a two-year college degree. Currently, only 42% of the state’s young adult population meets this requirement. Moving forward, a large number of those jobs will be in healthcare. The Career Quest was developed in partnership with GHC as part of our common mission to engage local high school students as they explore a variety of up-and-coming healthcare careers and local opportunities for a college education. It is our hope, that by helping students define their goals and options for college early on in high school, they will be motivated to complete high school and pursue a college education. We want students to know that there are a variety of options when mapping-out their future and they don’t have to go far to make it happen” stated Juliana Breithaupt, GHC director of community outreach and engagement.
Other partners for the camp include: Lee Green, Floyd County Schools, Healing Arts Center of Rome, Compassionate Paws, Floyd Medical Center, and GRU Medical School–Rome Campus.
